Implementation of technical textiles

Lecturers

  • Philippe Vroman, Xavier Flambard, Xavier Legrand, François Bordes, Dominique Le Besnerais

Course Objectives

  • To present the context for using technical textiles, particularly in the fields of filtration, composite splicing, medical textiles and safety clothing.
  • To learn the main uses of the products, the specific testing methods for the use, the fibres and textile textures used according to their properties.
  • To understand the role and specific performances of fibrous materials.
  • To know the technical and economic context of the application field.
  • Part ‘Performances of Technical Textiles’: imagine, realize, create knitted technical textiles from precise specifications in order to obtain a specific property among thermal and cutting resistance.

Skills:

  • To know how to choose the fibrous materials adapted to specifications.
  • To know how to justify the role of the fibrous materials in their application field.
  • To know how to control performances and characteristics of fibrous materials thanks to appropriate testing methods.
  • To know the potentials of textile materials in the viewed fields.
  • To know the technical vocabulary in French and in English - To meet specifications (choice of fabric, thread count, production parameters) - To write functional and technical specifications - To simulate a technical discussion from specifications with a provider, a specialist and technical staff - To adapt a machine for special needs - To know properties and technical applications in knitting - To control properties of technical knitted fabrics (weight in m², dimensional stability, thermal, cutting or punching resistance)

Prerequisites

  • Materials and textile fibres
  • Textile Manufacturing Processes
  • Basic metrology of textiles
  • Basic knowledge in physics and chemistry
  • TEXT01, FILA01, MAIL01, MAIL02

Course Description

  • Depends on lecturers and viewed fields.
  • Part with X. FLAMBARD: from examples, description of functionalities for technical knitted fabrics aimed at safety clothing (cutting weapon, fencing, anti fibre-breaking…)

Teaching Method

Lectures, workshops, practical workshops

Evaluation Method

MCQ (Multiple-Choice Question) about knowledge and skills.

Part ‘Performances of technical textiles’: the assessment is made during practical workshops through a technical report including the realization of knitted fabrics from precise specifications. It also includes the results of characterization measures of two specific properties in these fabrics and other technical textile products (cutting, punching or thermal resistance). References
